Student Work Samples
“This program is wonderful! Students
will be so well informed and prepared as they move forward in their schooling.”
Below are examples of projects our students develop. These samples show a progression from pure to applied abstraction and increasingly complex computer use. Each row represents a four-week exercise with distinct limitations that force focused creativity.
Design Exercise No.1
Figure/ground studies – using the space surrounding a single letterform – in which black and white shapes must be given equal emphasis.
Design Exercise No.2
Reinterpretation of Exercise No.2 using a limited selection of found type samples. Figure/ground equilibrium and dynamic design are valued over legibility.
Design Exercise No.3
Compositions for a symphony poster meant to illustrate typographic hierarchy.
Design Exercise No.4
Book jacket designs that focus on the use of color and typographic abstraction.
