Creative director Sol Sender tells the story of conception and birth of the Obama 08 logo, including the strategy behind it, developmental concepts and finalist designs for the identity not chosen by the campaign. Sender, now a strategist with design agency VSA Partners in Chicago, was creative director and principal of his own design firm, Sender LLC, when he was hired to create the campaign logo. In the fall of 2006, Sender and his team were engaged to do the work by MODE, a Chicago-based motion design studio with an existing relationship with David Axelrod, the Obama campaigns chief strategist. Obama 08 campaign took on design responsibility for the logo in mid-2007, and extended the identity across multiple applications.

Across a generation, a deep friendship blossomed between Alan Cope and author/artist Emmanuel Guibert. From it, Alan’s War was born: a graphic novel that is a deeply personal and moving experience, straight from the heart of the Greatest Generation; a unique piece of WWII literature; and a ground-breaking graphic memoir.

World-renowned graphic artist Stefan Sagmeister is respected for his maverick approach and gritty, handmade style. Once called “the Johnny Depp of the design world,” he blends sexuality, tenacity, and wit to create work that pushes boundaries and never fails to intrigue. Although today he’s best known as an innovative interactive artist, his early career predates modern desktop publishing tools.

This week’s Designing Minds is the first of three episodes about Sagmeister. In it, he discusses his early days as student making theatre posters, how he was affected by the popular artists of this time, and the use of humor in his work.
